Women with diabetes in pregnancy are more likely to have induction of labour, caesarean births, have delayed onset of lactation, and be separated from their infants. Their infants more likely to have low blood glucose levels, need hypoglycaemia treatment including infant formula or be admitted to the neonatal unit. While women with gestational diabetes appear to initiate breastfeeding at rates similar to the rest of the birthing population without diabetes, they may have a shorter duration of breastfeeding. Despite the potential challenges, women with diabetes are encouraged to breastfeed, especially as breastfeeding appears to be an important modulator for future maternal health, including the development of Type 2 diabetes.
This presentation will consider the practical pregnancy and early postnatal care that can be given to women with diabetes in pregnancy, that may increase the initiation and duration of breastfeeding and assist with promoting a positive breastfeeding experience.
